Tis The Season For Pup Treats!

🐾Pup Treats🐾
Have you ever made your own pet biscuits? It came as a shock that several of the organic treats we were buying for our pets contained processed ingredients that could be unhealthy and harmful. Just like we must read the ingredients in the food that we eat, it is the same for our dearly loved fur babies! Making your own tasty and cute pet treats is easy and a fun way to get your kids and grandkids on board to help too!
They are so simple to make and to be honest, I never would have considered making our own until I began reading the ingredients in the over the counter treats. Just like reading the labels on our food, if there are more than 5 ingredients beware. If you can't pronounce any of them or 'natural flavors' pops up, it's time to put those treats back on the shelf! 'Natural flavors' can mean up to 100 ingredients that you have no idea what they are and some of those may not be good for your pet.
This recipe makes about 35 biscuits depending on the size of your cookie cutters. If short on time, you can skip that part, use old fashioned oats and drop by teaspoons on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Flatten with the back of a spoon or the bottom of a glass.
Pumpkin is very good for your dog's digestion, contains Vitamin A, C, beta-carotene that can slow the aging process and high levels of zinc which is good for maintaining healthy skin and coats. If you have pumpkin seeds add them to your blender when you grind your oatmeal into flour. The seeds are a great source of protein and they can act as a natural dewormer too!
Since there aren't any possible harmful preservatives, you don't want to leave them out longer than several days at room temperature but you can easily store in the refrigerator or freezer for later use. We usually make several batches and store in 'BPA free' freezer ziplock bags that can last up to several months in the freezer.
Did you know that cinnamon and parsley are great for your pup's breath? I've included options using alone or together. They break easily so they are excellent for training too. If you don't want them to break easily, turn off the oven and let them cool for about 30 minutes before removing to harden up.
These treats also can be beautiful and fun gifts stored in mason jars tied up with a pretty bow, bells or other festive decorations❤️
Apple & Pumpkin Pet Treats
Prep: 20 minutes
Bake time: 20-25 minutes
Preheat oven: 350º
Ingredients*
3 1/2 cups oatmeal grounded in processor on high until flour like consistency. Keep about 1/4 cup flour on hand for lightly flouring the surface to roll out your dough on or Option B if short on time omit grinding/rolling and mix old fashioned oats together with the rest of the ingredients and drop by teaspoonfuls on parchment lined cookie sheets. Flatten with the bottom of a glass or the back of a large spoon.
3/4+ cup pumpkin puree
Note: Best to start gradually and add more if dough is too dry. Oatmeal flour absorbs moisture readily so start small and add as you work the dough.
1 medium red apple seeded, cored and grated or you can save time using 1/2 cup applesauce
Optional Breath Refresher
1 tsp cinnamon if no allergies
1/4 cup finely minced parsley
*Please use organic when available
You can sift the cinnamon and flour together or mix the cinnamon with either the grated apple or pumpkin puree. If using parsley you can add on top and mix together evenly. Combine all the ingredients until dough sticks well together but not too sticky. Roll in a ball and place on a lightly floured surface and knead the dough about 3-4 times until it's firm and ready to be rolled out without sticking to the surface or the rolling pin.
Roll out to about 1/4 inch thickness and cut out shapes using your favorite cookie cutters😊
Place on parchment lined cookie sheets so cleanup is minimal.
Bake at 350º for 20-25 minutes
Store in a covered container up to 3-5 days depending on the time of year and how warm your temperatures are. Since they don't have any preservatives you may want to keep them in the refrigerator to last longer or you can store for several months in the freezer. I always have some on hand in the freezer so we have extra on hand. These biscuits are great for training because they easily break into smaller pieces.
Easy to make oatmeal flour in your food processor on high
Roll out on a lightly floured surface
Parchment lined cookie sheets makes clean uo so much easier😊

About Me
My passion about health started in my teens when I first hand saw the effects of how illness can wreck havoc in a family growing up with parents who had serious health issues. I too struggled with losing weight & developed an eating disorder that I was able to heal by educating myself on healthier habits. It’s amazing what our bodies can do when we learn to take care of them like God intended. These experiences & challenges fueled my passion to be a life long student in pursuit of learning how to create healthier lifestyles where one can thrive at their optimal best. As a mother of 3 children & a wife of a traveling husband, I quickly learned how to implement healthy habits on the go so that I could be my healthy best for my family. This has evolved into my health coaching business Thriving With Health where I coach people to integrate simple & fun healthy 'bites’ throughout their day even on their most busiest & challenging ones. You are never too busy to take care of your health & I can show you how. Everyone has busy lifestyles and living at their optimum best is not only doable but can be fun as well!
