What led to making our own mixed seasonings? When we began reading labels we were surprised to find out that it wasn't uncommon to find chemically processed ingredients added that could be unhealthy. 'Natural flavors' can be a red flag to put the mix back on the shelf as this could mean up to 100 ingredients that you won't even know what they are. So we ventured out to discover how to make our own mixes that we would love and that our creations would love our minds and bodies back too. What we discovered is that making your own seasoning masterpieces was not only easy but a lot of fun to invite family and guests to create their own as well❣️
Making your own is a much healthier and delicious option that you will know exactly what is in them because you get to decide. This recipe is very basic to get you started creating your own that you can add more or less spice if you like. Feel free to experiment and omit any spices you may not prefer. It's totally up to you! That is the beauty of creating your own mix because you can customize your recipe the way that best suits you and your loved ones.
There is an ingredient that you may find surprising and that is cocoa powder! Be sure and use unsweetened cocoa. This will deepen the flavor and add richness to your mix. Experiment adding cocoa powder in with your pasta sauce too which can enhance your favorite version as well.
This taco seasoning will mix well with whatever meat or non meat alternative you choose for your tacos. A versatile seasoning that can be used with fajitas, stir frys, steamed or grilled veggies rice, potatoes, salads, scrambled eggs, omelettes and even quiches😋 Try it out on some of your favorite dishes and have fun creating your own masterpieces!
Note: if you want to spice it up some more you can add in some crushed red pepper flakes or additional cayenne pepper until you reach your desired level of spiciness🌶
Depending on the age of the spices you use, this mix should be good for up to 6 months stored in an airtight container. The older the spices the sooner the mix can lose some flavor.
Simple Taco Seasoning
Time: 10 minute
Yield: 1/2 cup
Ingredients*
2 Tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/4+ teaspoon salt to taste
1/4+ teaspoon black pepper to taste
1/8-1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper depending on how spicy desired
*Please use organic ingredients when available
Directions
Combine all the ingredients and blend or shake in an airtight container until well blended. Seasoning will last up to 6 months depending on the age of the spices used when mixed.
For taco meat seasoning mix 2+ Tablespoons (depending on the strength preferred) with 1/3-1/2 cup water for approximately 1 lb of meat non meat alternative.
