A Simply Delicious Greek Salad❣️

In October we went on a beautiful cruise in Greece around the Greek Islands and one of the meals we really enjoyed was their authentic Greek Salad also known as Horiatiki or Xoriatiki which means Village or Peasant Salad that refers to a rustic dish made with just a few simple quality ingredient - which definitely meets TWH's 'Simply Delicious & Nutritious' goals👍
Traditional Authentic Greek Salads are a bit different from the ones here in the United States. They are similar in that they are simple to make, very delicious, colorful and beautiful! A notable difference with the Greek version is that they usually don't use any lettuce. That was surprising but because they used more of the other ingredients we didn't even miss it.
Differences from the States ~
*No leafy lettuce
*No lemon dijon
*No garlic
*Cheese is not crumbled
*Salad dressing is not made ahead ~ added at the time of serving
Traditional Greek salads include sliced cucumbers, green bell peppers, thinly sliced red onions, pitted whole kalamata olives, and quartered tomatoes with lots and lots of tomatoes❣️🍅❣️ The salad is topped with one block or several of feta goat or sheep cheese with a drizzle of olive oil and a dash of dried oregano on top of the cheese. We found the same version in Athens and on the islands of Crete, Rhodes, Mykonos, Katakolon and Santorini. Some tavernas and cafes served them with capers which added a tasty variation to the flavor😋
Traditional Greek salad recipes include their very own produced Greek extra virgin olive oil (they are quite proud of) with a splash of red wine vinegar and a sprinkle of dried greek oregano. Greek oregano is known for its robust and intense flavor with a savory and earthy strong aroma. If you don't have any you can use regular oregano👍
The dressing is usually not made in advance and the olive oil, vinegar and oregano are added just before serving. Bread is served which is so delicious dipped in the salad soaking up the vegetable juices together with the olive oil, vinegar and oregano. YUM❣️
A very simple, delicious and beautiful meal all on it's own!
Authentic Greek Salad Bites ~
*You can slice or cut the vegetables in chunks.
*Green olives can be used if kalamata olives are not on hand
*Sheep or goat cheese can be used
*Use salt sparingly as the feta cheese and olives have plenty
*Serve with additional olive oil and vinegar so extra can be added if desired
You can serve this salad alone or together with whatever you would like. It pairs especially well of course alongside any Greek dishes🇬🇷
Easy and quick prep👩🍳
Simple & Delicious Authentic Greek Salad
Prep: 15 minutes
Servings: 8
Cuisine: Greek
Ingredients
*6 tomatoes cut into cubes
*1 medium to large red onion thinly sliced into rings or half rings
*3 Persian or 2 english cucumbers sliced into rounds or half moons (optional if using English, seeds can be removed by cutting cucumber lengthwise and spooning them out if preferred).
*2 green bell peppers sliced
*Whole pitted black kalamata or green olives as many as you would like
*16 ounce block feta cheese or 2 8 ounce blocks cut in medium to large squares, rectangles or triangles
Dressing
1/2 cup EVOO
2-3 Tablespoon red wine vinegar
1+ teaspoon dried Greek or regular oregano
Optional
Handful of strained capers
Sea salt use sparingly to taste (feta cheese and olives are salty;-)
Directions
*Wash all your vegetables and strain
*Place the cut vegetables in a large bowl and add the olives and capers if desired
*Drizzle the olive oil over the salad followed with a splash of red with vinegar and a sprinkle of oregano
*Toss together to mix well the vegetables juices with the dressing
*Top your salad with the feta cheese adding a drizzle of olive oil and a dash of oregano on top of the block or blocks
They even had Greek Salads to go in the Athens airport!
